ESCOM Outlines Plans To Invest In Power Generation,Sourcing :To End Blackouts By 2025

ESCOM TO ADD 70 MW OF POWER THROUGH SOLAR
One participant who was among the selected to have attended the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact 7th semi annual review forum has assured Malawians that the blackouts we have today, will be history by 2020 – 2025 if ESCOM is to live by its plans to invest in power generation.
ESCOM presented a comprehensive plan that will address our power challenges probably once for all. Below are the power projects planned/underway:
POWER UNDER PROCUREMENT:
1) Mzuzu (diesel) – 6MW by 2017
2) Nkula A upgrade (hydro) – 12MW by 2018
3) Tedzani III upgrade (hydro) – 11MW by 2019
4) Emergency diesel power – 78MW by 2017
5) Solar power (4 sites) – 70MW by 2019
6) Lilongwe diesel – 10MW by 2018
7) Blantyre diesel – 20MW by 2018
Total expected: 207 Megawatts
PLANNED POWER GENERATION:
1) Tedzani IV (hydro) – 18MW by 2021
2) Kammwamba (thermal) – 300MW by 2020
3) Mpatamanga (hydro) – 350MW by 2023
4) Kholombidzo (hydro) – 250MW by 2026
5) FUFU (hydro) – 240MW by 2029
6) Kapichira III (hydro) – 100MW by 2024
7) Hamilton Falls (hydro) – 100MW by 2025
8) Lower Songwe (hydro) – 180MW by 2032
Total expected: 1,538 Megawatts
PLANNED INTERCONNECTORS:
1) Mozambique – Malawi: 400kV by 2021
2) Zambia – Malawi: 400kV by 2022
Tanzania – Malawi: 400kV by 2032
Total expected: 1,200kV
