Mutharika Sets MK5million Endowment Fund In Honour Of Kudontoni:Pledges Support To Dependants
Grief and sorrow are the two words that can describe the atmosphere at Kambwiri school ground Traditional Authority in Senior Chief Kalonga’s area.
At exactly 14:00 hours on Friday afternoon State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika arrived in a somber mood without the usual colour and pomp.
Mutharika’s motorcade drove silently without the usual sirens and fanfare to mourn the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni.
Late Kudontoni died in a road accident at Kasese in Dowa on Thursday.
In his 5 minute eulogy, the grief- stricken Mutharika described Kudontoni as a dedicated and great speaker he has ever seen on the Malawi political scene.
“I talked to Kudontoni at around 10:00 hrs for thirty minutes when he informed me he was going to Kasungu to attend a funeral, later at around 11:00 hrs I got a call from the Inspector General of Police informing me of this death, I could not believe it,” said Mutharika.
The President added that in Kudontoni the party and the nation has lost a visionary, loving and selfless leader.
Mutharika said it is against such a background that he has decided to set a 5 million kwacha Ecklen Kudontoni Endowment Fund to honour the great politician.
Mutharika also pledged to support children and dependents of the late Kundontoni with their education needs up to university.
