State President Arthur Peter Mutharika says he sympathizes with traders who have lost property in the Lilongwe Market inferno but has been quick to assure them of government support.
In a statement released on Friday through State House press office, the President is shocked with the magnitude of the damage which is likely to be estimated in many millions.
“The State President expresses his deepest sympathy for the traders and families who depended on the burnt market for their daily living. The President is aware that the damage on people’s property at the market is significantly extensive and that this accident will affect many families in the time to come,” reads the statement which has been signed by Press Secretary Mgeme Kalirani.
The President has since assured all traders who lost their property that government will offer a helping hand of sort.
“The President is assuring the affected traders and families that Government will do everything within its means to support them during this difficult time,” the statement goes on to say.
He has also commended all stakeholders who played a part in putting out the fire and helping the traders rescue whatever they could. These include fire fighters from Lilongwe City Council who worked together with the Police, Malawi Defense Force (MDF) and Kamuzu International Airport fire department.
On another note, the President has called upon the Police to work round the clock so as to establish what or who caused the damaging inferno.
