Mutharika Signs The Paris Climate Change Agreement On The Sidelines Of UNGA
Malawi President Peter Mutharika who is in United States for 71st United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement on behalf of the government of Malawi.
Mutharika signed the treaty at the United Nations Headquarters in the presence of the Under-Secretary General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Miguel de Serpa Soares.
Among other things, the agreement puts together an internationally accepted framework for interventions on climate change and enables signatories to access funds the international community puts together to tackle climate change effects such as floods and drought and hunger.
So far, the Malawi President has met several high profile figures and participated in important gathetings.
On the same day, Mutharika made his address to the UN general assembly in which he outlines the possibility of having a well framed international market and called upon the international community to help Malawi among other things.
