Divisions Emerge In Cash gate -Former Ruling Peoples Party
Divisions have emerged in the Peoples Party with its hierarchy dismissing a resolution made by a meeting held in Mzuzu to fire the party’s leader Joyce Banda from her position.
Regional and district committee members from the northern region including some parliamentarians have agreed to remove the former President claiming the party lacked leadership.
They have since made a proposal to have her replaced with former Vice President Khumbo Kachale, a development which has further left the party in tarters.
Banda has been outside the country since losing the elections in 2014.
Banda created the People’s Party after being expelled from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in 2011.
In the same year , the court refused to register the organisation as an official political party because its name sounded too similar to others in the country.
Eventually the high court dismissed this and ordered that the party be registered within fourteen days.
Banda is believed to be staying in exile for fear of being cornered on cash gate related charges which occured during her rule.
