Joyce Banda’s Bodyguard Arrested Over Njaunju’s Death
A policeman who just recently served under Malawi former president Joyce Banda as bodyguard has been in police custody for two weeks now for his involvement in the murder of Issa Njaunju who was murdered gruesomely last year.
Late Njaunju was founded dead with bullet wounds on his chest behind Presidential Villas while his official vehicle was burnt to ashes in Mtsiliza Township.
The cop, Titus Thombozi, who was stationed at Mchinji was picked by his colleagues and officers from Police Headquarters after his girlfriend, a nurse at Mchinji district hospital, was found with the late Njaunju’s cellphone.
The police with help of the country’s two leading mobile phone operators, traced the phone and led to the arrest of the nurse who immediately implicated Thombozi as the one who gave her the phone.
Meanwhile, Malawi police special detectives, according to our sources at Area 30, are following up on some information Thombozi gave to police interrogators about possible involvement of his former boss Joyce Banda.
According to the source, it is alleged that Thombozi has disclosed that he was hired by his former boss to clean any trace of corruption that was left during the previous regime.
In this case Njaunju was suspected to be compiling all the hot cases that surrounded JB and her family together with some Nigerian oil magnates.
It is believed that the arrest of Thombozi will lead police to more arrests because he is now cooperating with investigators in solving a puzzle that has kept Malawians in the dark for almost a year now.
Thombozi served under JB as one of her closest security aides and he was stationed at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
Following his arrest and interrogation Thombozi has since been remanded at Maula Prison while waiting for government prosecution team to finalize their case and present it before Magistrate Court which is likely to commit it to High Court for it being a murder case.
